The WFI controversies
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is the governing body of wrestling in India and the controversy was raised in early 2023 when the former WFI President and member of Parliament Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was accused by women athletes of sexual harassment.
Renowned women athletes and World Championship medal-winning wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia made serious allegations of sexual harassment and protested in Jnatar Mantar for months demanding the arrest and the resignation of the former President of WFI Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for harassing women which included a minor.
The sports ministry assured the wrestlers and the wrestlers put off their protest but no official actions were taken by the authorities. In April 2023 the Supreme Court took over the matter and the FIR was made by the Delhi Police against Bhushan under the Sexual Offenses Act (POSCO Act) and the other for outraging modesty. In the WFI 2023 elections, Bhushan stepped back but presented his aide Sanjay Singh who is the new President of WFI and the commanding powers indirectly lie with Brij Bhushan only.
